New by the glass: Welschriesling from the Trabos winery in Gamlitz

Liane has once again tracked down a real find for your glass: the Welschriesling from the family-run Trabos winery in Gamlitz, southern Styria. We’re now pouring it by the glass at the Feierabend Bar — reason enough to introduce the winery and the wine a little.

A family winery with tradition on the Kranachberg

The Trabos winery sits on the Kranachberg in Gamlitz, in the heart of southern Styria — one of Austria’s most beautiful wine regions. There the Trabos family tends around ten hectares of vines, on steep slopes with ideal sunshine and sandy-loamy soils rich in humus. It is exactly this combination of steep sites and soil that makes for wines with real character.

Alongside the winemaking, the family also runs one of the region’s loveliest Buschenschank taverns right on the farm — with seasonal snack platters, cosy rooms and space for more than 150 guests, plus quiet arbour seating outdoors in the warm months. If you have ever travelled through southern Styria, you may already know the Kranachberg from a trip of your own.

The winery is best known for its Sauvignon Blancs, which have won international gold medals several times. But Trabos has made a name for itself beyond that too — among other things with its Welschriesling, which earned the family a special award from the Kleine Zeitung newspaper.

The Welschriesling: fresh, uncomplicated, honest

Welschriesling is one of Styria’s classic grape varieties — uncomplicated, unpretentious, but with exactly the freshness you want on a mild evening. The Trabos version opens with a whole basket of juicy fresh apples on the nose, then turns juicy and typically Styrian on the palate, with a racy, vigorous acidity. Compact and grippy, with spicy, piquant fruit and a wonderfully long, easy-drinking finish — exactly what a good Welschriesling should be.

That makes it the ideal companion to a classic Brettljause platter, and it goes just as well with light fish dishes. In short: a wine that makes no fuss about itself — which is exactly why it works so well.

Why it’s in our glasses now

Liane picked the Trabos Welschriesling for our guests because it brings exactly what a good bar wine needs: freshness, drinkability and an honest Styrian signature. As an aperitif, with a snack platter, or simply on a warm evening out on our terrace — do give it a try next time you drop in.

Cheers — see you soon at the Feierabend Bar!
